Meet the New Generation of Weight-Loss Drugs

Social Media Ads Promoting Weight-Loss Drugs Breach Regulations

Generations of young women have been bombarded with weight loss medications, and skinny jabs are just the latest in a long line of dangerous and ineffective products.

Noticing the perpetual lack of larger women's bodies in fashion and media, informants have come forward to discuss how the unrealistic beauty standards of society have impacted their physical and mental health. For years, diet culture and the promotion of weight-loss products have targeted and disproportionately affected women of size.

We've all seen the ads and read about celebrities who have successfully lost weight using one of the many weight-loss drugs on the market. But what you may not know is that many of these ads are not compliant with the regulations set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, a recent study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity found that over 90% of social media ads for weight-loss drugs violated FDA regulations.

These violations include making false or misleading claims about the safety and efficacy of the drugs, failing to disclose the potential side effects, and targeting children and adolescents. As a result of these violations, the FDA has taken action against several companies, including issuing warning letters and fines.
