Who is Angela Rayner?

Angela Rayner is a British politician who has served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party since 2020 and Shadow Deputy Prime Minister since 2021.

She has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashton-under-Lyne since 2015.

Early life and career

Rayner was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, in 1980. She grew up in a working-class family and left school at 16 to work as a care worker.

She later became a trade union activist and was elected to the Unite the Union executive council in 2010.

Political career

Rayner entered politics in 2015 when she was elected as the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne.

She was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet by Jeremy Corbyn in 2016, serving as Shadow Secretary of State for Education and then Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

In 2020, Rayner was elected as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, replacing Tom Watson.

Controversies

Rayner has been involved in several controversies during her political career.

In 2019, she was accused of bullying staff members, which she denied.

In 2021, she was criticized for breaking lockdown rules by attending a party during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Personal life

Rayner is married to Mark Rayner, a trade union official. They have three children.
